15The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.” (Proverbs 12:15)
So if it weren’t bad enough just being a fool, If you were a fool you might not even know it! Well, that’s not exactly with the proverb suggests, though for some poor souls that may be exactly the case. Here’s some help If you can’t think of the last time you submitted to someone else’s wise counsel other that ‘your own’ you may be a fool.
As the man of the household we have the huge responsibility of leading our family. Our Pastor did a series a few years back on the topic. He said that a critical component to leading out in a marriage is to be yielded to God and his authority over our lives. Now, the word authority can rub a lot of us the way. Wether it’s that new boss at work, taking a shortcut out of traffic through a coned-off construction area, or with God. Let’s be honest, we all have a little bit a fool in us, but we’ve got to resist against it. We are designed with a generous dose passion and independence that when channeled the wrong way can route us straight into the back end of pride.
Our Pastor used the illustration of the Umbrella. He encouraged us as men of the household to be choose to remain under the covering of The Umbrella! The idea is that if we choose not to submit to the cover of the Umbrella we’d be unnecessarily exposed to the elements, allowing the enemy to gain a foothold that we didn’t have to allow him to have to begin with. The book by Steven B. Curington, The Umbrella Fella – Overcoming Sin Through the Power of “In” tells the story that affects us all.
So what does this have to do with marriage? Everything. Just as we are under God’s umbrella, We have one to that God entrusted us to be the bearers of; to lead our family in the way that is honorable and that pleases Him. The security of the Umbrella is so important to our wives that if we aren’t man enough to step up to the task they will take it and try to lead where we should be taking them.
22Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. 25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” (Ephesians 5:22-25)
The design of the household is that the wives should submit to the husband. We are to love our wives as Christ loved the Church. Yeah, that’s right. He gave all, even his life for it. What woman wouldn’t want to be loved and lead by a man like that?
Be the Umbrella Fella that your wife needs and desires you to be. She’ll feel secure and loved in your care as you remain committed under the cover of God’s Umbrella over you!
