P is for “Pray Together”

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (Philippians 4:6)

I DO…

… commit to protect and lead out in my marriage in prayer daily.

Those that pray together, stay together.”

I’m not sure who originally coined the phrase, but living by this principle through rough patches in my own marriage, I couldn’t agree more.  Staying together, means much more than just staying married. You may too have seen in your circle of friends and family those that have stayed together, but not much other than the rings on the fingers would indicate a ‘togetherness.’ Maybe this is you or someone close to you.

Praying is core and essential for unlocking who God has created us to be. When we cross over the line to give our lives to God by accepting the new life that he made available to us though the sacrifice of His Son, the atonement of all of our muck, junk, and even future mess ups is forgiven and forgotten!  Therefore, his spirit being now able to dwell within a ‘washed-clean us’ literally transforms our thinking when we tap into that Spirit and turn our will over to Him. This is what miraculously impacts marriages, empowers the prayerful couple with the fruit of the spirit that Paul subscribes in Galatians 5:22-23.

Prayer is a whole lot more than an antenna reaching out to God residing somewhere in the heavens. It is a whisper in His ear, directly received by the very heart and mind of the Architect  of the universe! If God designed and created the most advanced makings of the physical nature of the universe or multi-verse (as physicists are now considering; pardon me while I nerd out), is it really surprising that He could turn water into wine, heal the crippled, or take our marriages to heights that we’ve never dreamed of?

Knowing this, why would we not pray with our wives daily, nightly, and whenever we are so ticked-off that we don’t feel like it!!  As our pastor recently mentioned in a message, feelings are not listed among the fruits of the spirit.  Amy and I have had our share of difficulty and have seen miracles in our lives as well as the lives of those around us that we have prayed for. We joke, but sometimes it seems that our bedroom would be better named the ‘holy of holies’ for all the prayers that have been miraculously answered there before bed.

How do you pray?  The disciples asked the same question of Jesus and he gave them an example to go follow.  The formula looks and can be remembered like this, as taught to us by our Pastor:

P - Praise and give thanks to God

RRepent; ask for forgiveness for where you’ve been off track

AAsk; request of him what you need help with

YYield to God; as Christ did in the Garden submit to God’s Will in the situation

Hopefully this encourages some of you to start or to keep encouraging others to do the same! Life is too short to have a prayerless marriage. Don’t pass up what God has set aside for you, your marriage, and where he will take you!

What examples of an unbelievable answered prayer/s would you share to encourage others here?
